Curtis Henderson Stanton, son of Samuel and Margaret Stanton, arrived in Braidentown in 1882 and formed a steamship line. He commissioned an iron hulled steamer from a shipyard in New York naming it Manatee. Curtis helped build and install the engine,

himself. The ship was launched in 1884 and Stanton served as her engineer during her maiden voyage. During her trip from New York, the Manatee delivered machinery for construction of a saw mill in the area, before commencing service with calls at Tampa, Palmetto, Manatee and Ellenton. The Manatee remained in service through the 1920s.

Stanton passed away in 1892 at the age of 27.
