Daniel Lloyd was born in England but it was love that brought him to Manatee. Daniel ran away from home at the age of 10 and worked on ships repairing sails throughout his adolescence. While his ship was being repaired after a wreck on the Florida reefs he met Adelaide Cunliffe (daughter of James and Nancy Cunliffe).
The life of a sailor was no longer meant for him and he followed her back to her family’s home along the Braden River in Manatee. Adelaide’s father, being from England himself, took quickly to the newcomer and Daniel and Adelaide were wed in 1868. Over time, the couple had three children together. It is unclear how Adelaide passed or where she is buried but, by 1881, Daniel was remarried to Hannah (née Parks). They had six children together including Hannah and Maria Isabelle.
